About Articles Rhinoplasty Do Rhinoplasty Surgeries Differ for Men?

Male patients can improve their facial symmetry, balance their profiles, raise their self-esteem levels, and find great satisfaction from their rhinoplasty results. If you’re a man considering a rhinoplasty procedure, these special considerations may help you learn more about the process and decide if it’s right for you.

Good Candidates for Male Rhinoplasty

All prospective rhinoplasty patients must begin the process with a one-on-one consultation with a facial plastic surgeon, during which you will discuss your desired results, your medical history, and your eligibility for surgery. To discover if you are an eligible candidate for surgery, you should be in good overall health, not smoke, and not have any health conditions that could interfere with your healing process. Your facial plastic surgeon will also want to make sure that your expectations for your rhinoplasty are realistic to avoid potential miscommunications and unsatisfactory results.

Beyond these basic qualifications for surgery, you will also need to have a fully mature nose before undergoing a rhinoplasty procedure. To achieve life-long results, your nose must have finished growing before your surgery. Immature nasal structures might affect your results over time. Most male patients should be at least 15 to 17 years old before considering surgery. Your facial plastic surgeon will evaluate your nose and determine your eligibility for rhinoplasty surgery.

Physical Differences of Male and Female Noses

Of course, every patient and every nose is unique, so every rhinoplasty procedure must be customized to provide the best results. While most noses are similar at least in their basic structure, the male nose often involves slightly different angles, proportions, and general features than the female nose. In men, for example, it is common to see a harsher angle between the base of the nose and the upper lip, something that is typically less severe than a woman’s. These differences, and others, could result in a different approach to the male rhinoplasty procedure.

Beyond nasal structure, most men also have thicker, more vascular skin than women. Careful measures should be taken during a male rhinoplasty to prevent potential complications, such as excessive bleeding or fluid retention.

Another physical consideration for male rhinoplasty patients is the possibility of previous, untreated injuries to the nose. Male patients are more likely to sustain sports injuries and other damage to the nose from other trauma, leading their surgeons to add internal, structural changes to their procedures. Some of the effects of previous damage may include a deviated septum, poorly repaired bones, crookedness, bumps or humps on the nasal bridge, and more. A rhinoplasty procedure can incorporate both functional and cosmetic changes to achieve a patient’s optimum results.

Psychological Differences in Male Rhinoplasty

As a man considering the rhinoplasty procedure, the psychological factors you face may be slightly different than those of a female patient. Rhinoplasty is less common among men, so you may have doubts about your choice, fear embarrassment, or have some hesitation because of the social stigma surrounding male plastic surgery. While all of these considerations are very real for male patients, there is no need to let these feelings get in the way of your desired results and satisfaction with your new look. Talk with your facial plastic surgeon to address any lingering concerns you may have before your surgery.
