About Articles Rhinoplasty Questions to Ask Your Rhinoplasty Surgeon

Rhinoplasty is a life-changing procedure, and therefore should not be undergone without having a thorough understanding of the surgery and recovery. A well-informed patient is more likely to be satisfied with the results. While searching the internet and reading numerous articles on rhinoplasty will help to develop a picture of what you should expect, these are no substitute for an in-depth conversation with your plastic surgeon. Asking several thoughtful questions will help you to gain the most from this meeting and any subsequent conversations.

Get to Know Your Surgeon

Aside from learning about rhinoplasty techniques and discussing your aesthetic goals, it is important to ask a few questions to gain some insight as to whether the surgeon you are consulting with is the right person for the job. You will want to ensure they have extensive experience, especially with your particular nasal problem.

  • How many rhinoplasty procedures do you perform each year? Then ask how many procedures the doctor performs similar to your case.
  • Are you Board Certified and, if so, for how long?
  • Do you prefer to use the closed or open approach? A good rhinoplasty surgeon will understand the importance of using either approach based on the unique needs of the patient.
  • What is your revision rate for procedures you have performed yourself? The national average for rhinoplasty procedures that require revision is about 15%. Even the best rhinoplasty surgeons cannot assure perfection, though their revision rates are very low, often around 5%.
  • What is your revision policy should I require a revision procedure?

Surgery and Recovery

Rhinoplasty is one of the most complicated plastic surgeries since the procedure can alter both the appearance of your nose and your ability to breath. After you have determined you are in capable hands, you will want to ask several questions pertaining to the surgery and recovery.

  • Are there any reasons I would not be a good candidate for rhinoplasty? The surgeon should have both your physical and mental health in mind.
  • What complications are associated with this procedure and how are they handled?
  • What type of anesthesia will be used during surgery? Do you offer other options? Who administers it?
  • Where will the rhinoplasty surgery be performed? Your rhinoplasty should take place at an accredited surgical facility.
  • How long is recovery? Make sure you are supplied with information about how long you should take off from work, as well as how long it will be until your nose is fully healed.
  • May I see before and after photos of past patients representative of my situation? If the answer is no, you may question their experience in the area you are looking for.
  • How far in advance should I schedule my surgery date?
  • What routines does your office follow for postoperative care?

These are only a sampling of questions to get you started. The most important thing is to be honest with your plastic surgeon and that you feel comfortable with him or her. If you are unhappy with any of their responses, consult with others until you feel ready to choose one.
